Eryri Cup
Llandudno 16s win Eryri Cup Final
Under perfect conditions in Caernarfon Rugby Club, Llandudno U 16s provided an impressive display of both forward and back play by beating Pwllheli 55 - 3. However, the first ten minutes belonged to Pwllheli. Playing down the slope they had Llandudno restricted to their own 22 m. They took the lead with a penalty after Dudno strayed offside mid field. It wasn’t long however before the first try came. Throughout the season, Llandudno have never been scared to initiate attacks from deep within their own half. The first try demonstrated this. The ball passed through several pairs of hands before being knocked on on the Pwllheli 5 m line. From the resulting scrum, we saw a series of pick and drives which resulted in Jamie Kelly crossing for his try. The second came from a half break from Harri Evans who managed to keep his hands free to offload to Sam McKean. Two hand offs later and quick feet saw McKean cross for an impressive try. Another series of pick and drives led to Rob Jones crossing the try line. The remaining tries came from Llion Evans after the ball had been passed down the length of the back line. Evans put through a perfectly timed kick behind the defensive line before gathering the ball, drawing the defence and offloading to Ethan Burton to sprint in for his try.
The second half produced another four tries. The first came immediately from the kick off after a good chase when Kelly crossed for his second. Llion Evans crossed for his second after a defensive error by Pwllheli. Alun Webb was in close support to Harri Evans when he broke the line to sprint 50 metres for his first of the afternoon. Finally, Llion Evans bagged his third after a powerful surge from Kelly up the touch line. Alun Webb converted 5.
Llandudno cruise to win over Caernarfon to claim Eryri Cup
Llandudno Under 14's had to play Caernarfon in their own back yard in the final of the Eryri Cup, having beaten Pwllheli and Nant Conwy on the way.
Playing up the slope in the first half, Llandudno found themselves 7-0 down in the first 2 minutes. However, this was not going to last long as Ryan Parry gathered the ball in his own half and went on a jinking run along to the touchline to score in the corner with 5 minutes gone. Ryan narrowly missed the conversion to make the score 7-5 to Caernarfon.
From the restart, Llandudno started to make inroads into the Caernarfon defence, and after 10 minutes Francesco Gallina took an inside pass from Theo Bertola to cross in the corner. Again Ryan Parry narrowly missed the conversion. After 10 minutes the Score was 10-7 to Llandudno.
These quick scores seemed to push Llandudno on, who started to play some excellent rugby and again crossed the line after 17 minutes, with Seb Collinge scoring an excellent try. This time Ryan converted to make the score 17-7 to Llandudno. The score remained at this until half time, mainly due to some excellent defending by Llandudno to keep the waves of Caernarfon attacks at bay.
The second half saw Llandudno play down the slope, and were first on the score sheet with Josh Roberts crossing the line after some excellent attacking play from both backs and forwards. Ryan missed the conversion from the far touchline to make the score 22-7 to Llandudno. At this point, Caernarfon upped their game and scored 2 quick tries to take the score to 22-19 to Llandudno.
This was the end of Caernarfon’s expeditions over the Llandudno line, as Llandudno moved swiftly though the gears to pull away. Seb Collinge showing the watching North West Wales Development Officer why he is the best Centre in North Wales, by running in 3 tries in quick succession. The first saw him collect a pinpoint restart by Cameron Davies, sidestep 3 defenders to cross under the posts – exactly as it works on the training ground. His next try was pure individual skill. Taking the restart, in his own 22m area, he again used his strength, speed and agility to run through at least two thirds of the Caernarfon team to cross the line. Ryan unfortunate to miss the conversion. Seb’s third try in 5 minutes showed him use his natural ability to finish off a flowing move under the posts, which was converted by Ryan Parry. This quick scoring spree, knocked the wind out of Caernarfon’s sails and left Llandudno leading 41-19.
The game continued with Llandudno ringing the changes to ensure the whole travelling squad got the experience of winning a final, and managed to score another try. Attacking from their own half, using well won ball, Cameron Davies chipped over the defence, and followed through to re-gather his kick after a bounce, and step the full back to cross near the posts. Ryan Parry converted to make the score 48-19. This was the final play as the referee decided that time was up.
This was an excellent all round performance from all players involved. The forwards took on a much bigger pack, and showed them how a good set of forwards can play.
The back row of Callum Owen, Jake Lovatt and Josh Roberts gave their opposition no time and secured some good ball on the floor.
The front five of Scott Chadwick, Danny Greenman, Michael Williams, Grant Williams and Ryan Jones provided the ‘dog’ that was needed in hitting rucks.
Half backs Ashley Rees-Davies and Cameron Davies controlled the game well, particularly when the score got close.
The centre pairing of Francesco Gallina and Seb Collinge showed their class by scoring 5 tries between them.
The back 3 of Jack Noble, Theo Bertola and Ryan Parry, ran all day and tackled when required.
The replacements who all made an appearance – Warren Williamson, Kieran Westall, Sam Merrill, Alwyn Lister, Mickey Murrey and Jacob Cornwall showed the amount of talent there is in this squad, and when called upon they stepped up to the mark.
With the early kick off, a reasonable sized crowd had gathered with a lot of support from the home team as expected, but they were outdone on the day by the marvellous support that made the journey along the A55.
A huge thank you to everyone who supported the team, not only today, but also through the season. It is really appreciated and it does make a difference.
One final thank you to Marc Roberts and Gaz Williams, who deputised as coaches for the Pwllheli match – without you, we may never have won the trophy!!
Mewn Nerth Ymlaen!
